The story
Four best friends (Tibby, Lena, Carmen & Bridget) who buy a mysterious pair of pants that fits each of them, despite their differing sizes, and makes whoever wears them feel fabulous. When faced with the prospect of spending their first summer apart, the pals decide they'll swap the pants so that each girl in turn can enjoy the magic.
What it’s like
Warm, sun-washed summer light fills most of this film: bright beach towns, sandy boardwalks, lakeside porches and sunny bedrooms, shot in clean, sweetly saturated colour with lots of mid-shot conversations and easy handheld cutting between four girls. The vibe is bright and wistful, a feel-good summer comedy with a tender ache underneath, well suited to a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or a long-haul flight. Its rhythm is brisk and episodic, moving between four separate stories, one per girl, each shaped by first heartbreaks, family strain and the discomfort of growing up. The emotional register is sincere and affectionate, with a gentle comedic lightness and romance that stays sweet rather than steamy. Its people are young women slowly learning to face hard changes without their closest friends beside them. Intensity is low: some teenage sadness, mild sexual tension and kissing, a brief serious illness storyline and occasional family conflict, but no violence, gore or real cruelty. It suits viewers who want something gentle, nostalgic and warm, especially those who enjoy teen friendship stories.
