The story

Upon moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures.

What it’s like

Bright, slightly storybook live-action fantasy with a warm, bustling family feel: sunlit rooms and wood-panelled interiors give way to dim, cobwebbed corners of an old country house, and the creatures are rendered with a tactile, practical-leaning CGI that stays sharp rather than glossy. The palette leans on greens, ochres and autumn browns, with a Halloween-season chill in the woods and garden. The score is orchestral and bouncy, swelling for chase sequences and softening for quieter sibling scenes. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with the energy of a family adventure that keeps stopping to let its characters bicker, bond and grow up a little. The emotional register is playful with an undercurrent of loneliness and grief, following three siblings who learn to trust one another and to face a frightening, enchanted world together. Intensity is mild: creature peril, scuffles, a few frightening moments with goblin-like beings, and some slapstick, but no gore and nothing sexual. It suits a family movie night, a weekend afternoon, or a cozy October watch, and is best for viewers who want a gentle, imaginative fantasy with sibling warmth and no real brutality.
