The story

The beautiful princess Odette is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer's spell. Held captive at an enchanted lake, she befriends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle and Puffin the bird. Despite their struggle to keep the princess safe, these good-natured creatures can do nothing about the sorcerer's spell, which can only be broken by a vow of everlasting love.

What it’s like

Bright, hand-drawn cel animation with saturated greens and golds: sunlit castle towers, a glassy enchanted lake ringed by reeds, and the soft haze of a forest at dawn. The camera moves in confident, storybook sweeps, cutting between wide establishing shots and close, expressive faces, while the songs, written in a brisk Broadway-pop idiom, give the film a lively, bouncing rhythm. The score is orchestral and sweeping in the romantic passages and goofy and percussive in the comic ones. Its vibe is sunny, playful and warm, with a light romcom bounce and a sprinkling of nostalgia. It suits a Saturday-morning family viewing, a comfort rewatch with kids, or an easy afternoon when you want something bright and uncomplicated. The intensity is gentle: a villain with a menacing voice and some peril and chase moments, but no gore, no real violence, and nothing frightening for young children. Emotionally it follows a proud princess and a determined prince learning to trust each other, with a sidekick trio of a frog, a turtle and a bird adding comic warmth. It is for families and anyone who wants a gentle, tuneful, old-fashioned fairy tale with no grit.
