The story
This colorful adventure tells the story of an impetuous mermaid princess named Ariel who falls in love with the very human Prince Eric and puts everything on the line for the chance to be with him. Memorable songs and characters -- including the villainous sea witch Ursula.
What it’s like
Hand-drawn animation in saturated, sun-warmed color: turquoise shallows, coral reefs in pinks and violets, and a sea that glows gold when the light breaks through the surface. The camera sweeps and tilts with the fluid, theatrical energy of mid-century Disney, moving from wide underwater vistas to close, expressive faces, while the cheerful sea creatures and the bustle of a seaside kingdom fill every frame. Songs drive the rhythm, with bright, showtunes-style numbers that bloom into full-color set pieces, then give way to quieter, dreamy passages in grottos and moonlit water. The vibe is buoyant and whimsical with a shadowy edge in Ursula's lair, all dark purples and eerie green glow. Intensity is mild: peril and a menacing sea witch, but no gore, and the stakes resolve in a warm, triumphant finale. Good for family movie nights, a comfort rewatch, or anyone wanting bright, musical, romantic fantasy with a gentle sense of danger. Made for children and adults who love classic animated musicals.
