The story
The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. With mermaids forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
What it’s like
Saturated undersea blues and turquoise give way to bright, sun-warmed palettes on land, with the grand musical numbers staged in big, sweeping camera moves and ornate production design. Underwater scenes glow with bioluminescent light filtering down through the water, while the surface world is all golden sand, sunlit harbors, and flowing fabric. The score is lush and orchestral, with the songs carrying much of the emotional weight. The vibe is bright, romantic and wholesome, with a warm, adoring tone that suits a family movie night, a comfort rewatch, or a cheerful afternoon with kids. Pacing is brisk and buoyant, built around song-and-dance set pieces, and the emotional arc follows a headstrong young woman who longs for something beyond her world and a love that is worth the risk. Intensity is low: there is some peril, a sea-witch villain with menacing moments, and a shipwreck-style storm, but no gore and little real fear. It is for people who want a sweet, sing-along fairy tale with spectacle and a gentle sense of danger.
