The story

Barbie stars as Merliah, a surfer who learns a shocking secret: she's a mermaid! She and her dolphin friend set out for an undersea adventure to rescue her mother, the queen of Oceana.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated animation in the classic Barbie-film manner: flat pastel palettes, glossy cel shading, and sun-washed beaches with turquoise water that turns jewel-toned once the story drops beneath the waves. Camera work is simple and tidy, with wide establishing shots of coastline and surf, then softer close-ups on faces and hair as characters talk. Underwater scenes shimmer with bioluminescent glows, coral reef colours and drifting sea-life, giving the world a dreamy, storybook depth. The score is upbeat pop and orchestral swells, with bouncy, catchy songs that punctuate the action and lift the mood. Pacing is brisk and light, with short scenes and a steady stream of cheerful momentum. Tone is sunny, optimistic and gently whimsical, the kind of comfortable, feel-good fantasy that suits a Saturday morning, a family movie afternoon or a childhood comfort rewatch. Intensity is very low: mild peril, no gore, no real violence, just a few tense moments that resolve quickly. Emotional arcs centre on a young woman discovering her identity and reconnecting with family, with friendship and loyalty at the core. Made for young children and parents who want something bright, gentle and easy to watch together.
