The story

After the birth of Renesmee, the Cullens gather other vampire clans in order to protect the child from a false allegation that puts the family in front of the Volturi.

What it’s like

Pale winter light, snow-dusted pine and a cold blue-grey palette give this its look, with the warmer, candlelit stone of an old Italian hall providing the contrast. The camera is mostly steady and conventional, with polished digital sheen and slow push-ins on faces, and the forest and wolf-pack scenes carry a glossy CGI texture. The score is lush and orchestral with swelling strings and sustained piano, interrupted by a few pop tracks. The pace is deliberate through its long domestic and romantic passages before shifting into a stretch of confrontation, and the emotional register is earnest, devoted and slightly melodramatic. Its people's arcs move from private hope toward a protective, hard-won acceptance. Intensity is moderate: a climactic battle with fast, stylised violence, some vampires torn apart and burned, and occasional dread, but no sustained gore, and romance stays chaste and suggestive. Best for fans of supernatural teen romance who want a comfortable, familiar sweep of grand emotion.
