The story

Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.

What it’s like

Bleached, washed-out daylight over ash-grey landscapes, with wide empty sand flats, a rusted-out seaside town and dim, sooty interiors lit by a single lamp or a sliver of sunlight through boarded gaps. The camera favours patient, mostly steady framing that lets silence hang, then cuts sharply into tense close-ups of hands, feet and faces. Sound does the storytelling: long stretches of near-total quiet broken by a creak, a scrape, or a sudden stinging crash, with a low, mournful score that swells only at the worst moments. Tone is anxious and grief-heavy, a slow-burning dread that tightens into bursts of brutal, fast violence, though there is no gore on screen and nothing sexual. Its pacing is taut and deliberate, its people's arcs about a fractured family learning to trust one another and a young woman finding courage in her own hard-won resilience. Best for a tense, focused night in with the lights off, or for viewers who want suspense built on silence and fierce, quiet strength rather than gruesome spectacle.
