The story

An immortal being takes on the form of a human boy, wandering the earth and experiencing the pains and joys of life throughout his story without end.

What it’s like

Soft-edged hand-drawn animation with muted earth tones, watercolour-like skies and wide landscapes that feel quietly lonely, shifting between sun-washed meadows, grey coastal towns and dim, cluttered interiors. The palette warms and cools with each new life, and the score leans on gentle piano and sparse strings that let silences hold. Pacing is unhurried and episodic, with long stretches of ordinary days and conversation punctuated by sudden, often grim turns. The emotional register is wistful and melancholy, with a tender undercurrent of friendship and grief, and the arcs follow a being who keeps losing the people he loves and slowly learns what they meant to him. Intensity is moderate to high: there are frequent scenes of mutation, injury and bodily horror, some violence and death handled with weight rather than spectacle, and emotional tragedy that lingers. This suits a slow evening alone rather than light background viewing. It is for viewers who want contemplative science fiction about mortality, transformation and what it means to keep living.
