What it’s like

Bright, flat limited-animation colour in the way of early-1960s Hanna-Barbera: crisp outlines, poster-pink sunsets, a grey-blue Manhattan of brick walls, fire escapes and cluttered alleys, and a trash can that is always the centre of the frame. Camera work is simple and stage-like, with characters trotting across static backgrounds and the occasional zippy cut for a chase. The score is jaunty jazz-tinged brass and bouncy xylophone stingers, and the dialogue is brisk, wisecracking and full of hustler slang, so the sound is as busy as the picture. The vibe is cheerful, scrappy and mischievous, with a low hum of urban grime softened by goodwill. It suits a Saturday morning, a light background watch while doing chores, or a comfort rewatch when you want something quick and funny. Pacing is snappy, each episode built around a scheme that escalates and collapses, and the emotional register stays warm and playful throughout. The central arc is a clever small-time con artist who keeps getting caught yet keeps charming his way out, with his grudging rapport with the lumbering officer giving each story its heart. Violence is limited to slapstick: bonks, tumbles and cartoon mayhem with no gore, no real threat, and nothing frightening. It is gentle, family-friendly fare for kids and for adults who enjoy classic cartoon banter.
