The story

Ten-year-old Coop Burtonburger's life takes a turn for the worse when his little sister, Millie, brings home a mysterious stray cat who, in reality, is an evil cybernetic alien in disguise. To make matters worse, neither his family nor anyone else believes him, except for his best friend, Dennis. Now, Coop risks his life every day as he attempts to foil the cat's diabolical schemes and prove to the world that the family pet is an evil mastermind.

What it’s like

Bright, flat, saturated Saturday-morning animation: clean outlines, primary colours, simple backgrounds of suburban kitchens, cul-de-sacs and sci-fi lab interiors, with a stylised, slightly exaggerated cartoon energy in its movement. The sound is busy and cheerful, with bouncy incidental music, zippy gadget noises and rapid-fire banter that makes it a good background watch while doing chores or half-attending on a lazy afternoon. Episodes move quickly, built around escalating one-upmanship between a determined kid and a scheming, deadpan cat, so the mood is playful and mischievous with a steady undercurrent of rivalry. Stakes stay low: the alien cat's schemes are goofy and gadget-driven, the peril is slapstick rather than frightening, and the conflict is repeatedly defused with a laugh. Violence is cartoonish (bonks, explosions, sight gags) with no gore, no sexual content and nothing that lingers. The emotional register is warm and lightly comic, with an arc about a boy whom nobody believes learning to trust his own instincts and his loyal best friend. It suits families with younger children, adults who enjoy a silly sci-fi comedy, and anyone wanting an easygoing, gentle-to-moderately-chaotic watch.
