The story

Transport Tycoon Deluxe was released in 1995, and featured new varieties of landscape and weather, new scenarios, more vehicles and allowed the player to run their company all the way from the year 1950 up to the year 2050.

What it’s like

Clean, flat-shaded isometric vistas in bright, saturated palettes, with tiny trucks, buses and trains crawling along hand-laid rails and roads through green fields, desert, snow and sea. Sound is a light sequence of chirpy effects and a gentle, looping chiptune score that stays in the background, with the occasional rattle of a train whistle or a cash chime. The rhythm is unhurried and absorbing: you lay track, place stations, watch routes settle and vehicles queue, and slowly watch a small company grow across seven decades, from 1950 toward 2050, as vehicles get faster and the map fills out. Vibe-wise it is calm, tidy and quietly satisfying, a go-to for a rainy afternoon or a spell of background play while doing something else. There is no violence, gore or fear; the only stakes are money, traffic jams and the odd bankruptcy warning, all delivered with a light touch. Suited to anyone who loves building systems, planning networks and watching small, orderly machines run smoothly, from puzzle-minded players to nostalgic veterans of 1990s PC gaming.
