Universal Soldier: The Return

Directed by Mic Rodgers

The story

Luc Deveraux, the heroic former Universal Soldier, is about to be thrown into action once again. When SETH, the supercomputer-controlled ultra-warrior, decides to take revenge and destroy its creators, only Luc can stop it. All hell breaks loose as Luc battles SETH and a deadly team of perfect soldiers in a struggle that pits man against machine and good against evil.

What it’s like

Hard, saturated action-cinema look: flat fluorescent corporate interiors, sterile labs washed in cold blue and green monitor glow, and dim industrial corridors broken up by sudden orange muzzle flashes and fireballs. The camera leans on fast cutting, quick push-ins and kinetic handheld moves during fights, with plenty of slow-motion impacts, while quieter stretches settle into conventional static two-shots. Sound is loud and synthetic, with a pounding electronic score, heavy gunfire and explosions, and the hum of computers used as a constant low dread. The vibe is brash, glossy and slightly cheesy, a late-nineties straight-to-video energy with big-budget ambitions. Its intensity is high: frequent, stylised gunfights and hand-to-hand violence, explosions and some bloodless but brutal impacts, with no sexual content and little real emotional weight. It suits a Friday night with friends, a lazy action fix, or a ironic late-night watch, and it is for viewers who enjoy Van Damme's physicality and don't need subtlety or a gentle pace.
