The story
Eccentric scientist Victor Von Frankenstein creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.
What it’s like
Grimy Victorian London rendered in sooty browns, gaslight amber and cold blue shadow, with the camera often tight and restless, swooping through crowded laboratories and dank circus tents. The score leans on pounding percussion and swelling strings, so the mood feels brisk and theatrical rather than hushed. This is a gothic horror-adventure with a playful, slightly irreverent edge: a brilliant, arrogant medical student and his hunchbacked assistant, a fast-talking outsider who makes the experiments feel like a performance. Its tone is mischievous and kinetic, with a lot of banter between the two leads and a steady pull toward a dark, sad core about a creature who only wants to belong. Violence is present and occasionally bloody, including surgery, reanimation scenes and a few brief, sharp fights, but it stays more grotesque than gory and rarely lingers. Best suited to a rowdy Friday night or a viewer who enjoys Gothic spectacle with a wink, rather than anyone seeking quiet or gentle viewing.
