The story

In this gritty and sometimes bloody tale, sixteen year-old Wayne sets out on a dirt bike with his new crush Del to take back the 1978 Pontiac Trans Am that was stolen from his father before he died. It is Wayne and Del against the world.

What it’s like

Overcast grey daylight over post-industrial New England towns, with scuffed asphalt, chain-link fences, and dirt tracks cutting through scrubby woods. The palette leans on washed-out greens, rust and cold blues, with the occasional warm interior glow from a kitchen or a motel room. Handheld camera keeps close to its teenage leads as they ride and scheme, so the frame feels restless and unpolished. The score is sparse and rock-tinged, with long stretches of ambient road noise, engine roar and wind doing the work. Its vibe is gritty, bruised and restless, the sort of thing to watch on a cold weekend or late at night when you want rough edges over polish. The pacing is steady and character-driven, with tension building in small domestic moments as much as in the chases. Its emotional register is grief and loyalty tangled with bad choices, and the central relationship between two young outsiders slowly deepens into trust. Intensity is moderate and uneven: there is crime, a fair amount of fighting, and some bloody violence that lands hard when it arrives, though it is not constant. It suits viewers who want a grounded, working-class coming-of-age story with a flinty edge rather than anything gentle.
