The story
Dan Chase absconded from the CIA decades ago and now lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past.
What it’s like
Dusty desert highways, sun-bleached motel rooms, and rugged mountain country shot in wide, patient frames that let the emptiness breathe, with warm amber light at dusk and cool blue grey in the night scenes. The palette runs earthy and weathered: rust, sand, faded denim, the glow of a single lamp. Pacing is measured, with slow, unhurried scenes of an older man doing small chores and quiet routines punctuated by sudden bursts of tense movement and a handful of brief, sharp fights that land hard and then recede. Sound leans on sparse acoustic guitar and low, steady strings, with long stretches of wind and gravel underfoot. Vibe: wry, weathered, quietly nostalgic, with a dry humour underneath. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a long drive, or a comfort watch with a cup of coffee. Intensity is moderate: some gunfire and brief, grounded violence, with little gore and no sexual content. The emotional register is reflective and warm, centring on a lonely veteran slowly reckoning with his past and reconnecting with the people he left behind. For viewers who enjoy grounded spy stories with character at their heart, rather than relentless set pieces.
