The story
This psychological thriller follows two Navajo police officers, Leaphorn and Chee, in the 1970s Southwest as their search for clues in a grisly double murder case forces them to challenge their own spiritual beliefs and come to terms with the trauma of their pasts.
What it’s like
Wide, sun-bleached desert under a hard blue sky, with long establishing shots of mesas, scrub, and dusty two-lane highways that make the Navajo Nation feel vast and lonely. The palette runs to ochre, rust, and faded turquoise, with interiors lit by warm lamplight and the flat glare of motel rooms and trading posts. Camera work is patient and observational, with slow pans and still frames that let silence sit between lines; the score is sparse, built on low drones and sustained strings that swell quietly when the spiritual and the procedural start to blur. The pace is unhurried, closer to a slow-burn mystery than a chase, and the register is melancholy and contemplative, with dread that lingers rather than jolts. Violence exists because a double murder anchors the case, and crime scenes are shown with some grimness, but the gore is restrained and the cruelty mostly implied. The two leads carry most of the emotional weight: a weary veteran and a younger officer each quietly reckoning with grief, memory, and what they owe their traditions. Suited to viewers who want atmospheric, character-led detective drama with a strong sense of place and a meditative, spiritually inflected mood.
