The story
A devout detective's faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
What it’s like
Wide, sun-scorched Utah landscapes give way to dim interiors of wood-panelled kitchens, church halls and tract houses, shot with a restrained, often static camera that lets silences stretch and lets faces carry the weight. The palette runs from dusty ochre and cold blue daylight to warm amber lamplight at night, with the mountains looming as a constant, indifferent backdrop. Sound is sparse: ambient wind, murmured hymns, and a low, sustained score that swells only at moments of dread. Pacing is deliberate and layered, moving between present-day police work and the 1980s, and the violence, though central, is brief and grounded, with aftermath lingering longer than the act itself. Expect some graphic crime-scene detail and a disturbing sense of abuse and coercion, but no gore for its own sake. Its emotional register is sombre, questioning and tense, with a quiet unease that builds as a devout man's certainty begins to fray. It suits a slow, attentive evening rather than background viewing, and is best for viewers who enjoy patient true-crime-style mysteries that treat faith, family loyalty and institutional power as the real subject.
