The story
Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore — two churchgoing couples — enjoy their small town Texas life... until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.
What it’s like
Warm, sun-bleached Texas suburbia in 1980: pastel living rooms, sprawling lawns, hazy golden afternoons, and a sticky, churchgoing calm that feels pleasant right up until it doesn't. The look is glossy, carefully composed prestige-drama, with tidy symmetrical frames and smooth camera moves that keep the surfaces gleaming while something rots underneath. The score is sparse and wistful, with slow piano and country-tinged strings that turn the mood sour as the story tilts. Pacing is unhurried, a slow-burn drift through domestic small talk, affairs, and quiet panic, so the mood is one of creeping unease with a sharp, violent break in the middle. The violence is real and disturbing: a single brutal axe killing shown with unflinching force, with other bloodshed and sexual content handled more by implication and dialogue. Its emotional register is dark, wry, and morally gray, with a woman's unraveling and a marriage's collapse at the center. Best for viewers who enjoy true-crime dramatizations, polished period mood, and a cool, knowing look at respectable people unravelling. Not suited to anyone seeking something gentle.
