The story

Abandoned by her family, Kya raises herself all alone in the marshes outside of her small town. When her former boyfriend is found dead, Kya is instantly branded by the local townspeople and law enforcement as the prime suspect for his murder.

What it’s like

Marsh light does most of the work here: wide, sun-bleached North Carolina wetlands under hazy golden-hour skies, reeds hissing in warm wind, tidal mud glowing silver after rain, and long lingering shots of a young woman's small boat drifting through fog. The palette runs ochre, pale green and bruised grey, with the coastal town rendered in cooler, harsher daylight that makes the judgments feel colder. Pacing is unhurried and reflective, with quiet stretches of sketching, observing birds and gathering shells that give way to tense courtroom sequences and flashbacks threaded through with a slow, aching score. Its emotional register is a melancholy blend of loneliness, resilience and first love, with some sharp moments of cruelty: domestic abuse and alcoholism appear in disturbing scenes, bullying lands hard, and there is one brief, shocking act of violence, though no gore. The arc follows a self-taught outsider slowly learning to trust, wrestling with rejection and suspicion. It suits a rainy weekend afternoon, a thoughtful evening alone, or viewers who want a patient, atmospheric drama with a mystery running underneath, and it is best avoided by anyone seeking something gentle or free of abuse.
