The story
Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break, no place is safe.
What it’s like
Cold, washed-out daylight and grey-green seascapes give this film a bleak, rain-hung look, with handheld framing that stays close to its characters as they move through overgrown coastal ground and ruined outposts. Creature design leans on shadow and partial reveal rather than full glare, so the menace arrives in bursts of motion and sudden sound against long stretches of wind, waves and ticking quiet. The score is sparse and tense, pulsing under scenes of training and waiting. Its vibe is apocalyptic dread with a steady undercurrent of paternal tenderness, best suited to a late-night watch when you want an end-of-the-world story with momentum. Pacing is brisk and mostly urgent, with quieter stretches that let the father-daughter bond register. Violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, with creature attacks, bloody injuries and peril throughout, and the fear is more visceral than cerebral. It suits viewers who enjoy monster survival thrillers and bleak, climate-tinged catastrophe, not those looking for something gentle.
