The story

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen adds extensive new content in the fight against Advent when additional resistance factions form in order to eliminate the alien threat on Earth. In response, a new enemy, known as the “Chosen,” emerges with one goal: recapture the Commander. This expansion includes new Hero classes to counter the “Chosen”, new enemies, missions, environments and increased depth in strategic gameplay.

What it’s like

Cool, desaturated palettes dominate: rain-slick concrete, dim bunker interiors lit by monitor glow and sickly sodium streetlight, and bright alien-tinted skies over ruined cities. Its look is grounded and industrial rather than glossy, with clean UI panels, soft-focus cutscene portraits and the occasional sweep of a wide tactical map. The soundscape is a tense, pulsing synth score that drops out into quiet between missions, broken by the clipped chatter of soldiers and the eerie drone of Advent hardware. Turn-based pacing gives it a deliberate, chess-like rhythm: long stretches of planning in a dim base, then short bursts of sudden, cinematic panic when a squad is ambushed. The mood is tense but absorbing, a slow-burning mix of dread and satisfaction, with a sense of quiet competence as your ragtag resistance grows. Violence is frequent but stylised: soldiers are wounded or killed in brief, bloodless-leaning hits, with some alien monstrosities and dark cutscene moments, so it isn't gentle. It suits long evenings alone, a focused weekend session, or anyone who likes building a crew they grow attached to. It's for strategy players who enjoy careful planning, escalating stakes and rivalries with a recurring villain.
