The story

Xena is an infamous warrior on a quest to seek redemption for her past sins against the innocent. Accompanied by her comrade-in-arms Gabrielle, the campy couple use their formidable fighting skills to help those who are unable to defend themselves.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated studio daylight on painted Greek hillsides, sunlit ruins and rowdy taverns lit warm and flat, with the bronze-and-leather costumes catching a glossy, slightly theatrical sheen. Fight scenes are quick, kinetic and often playful, with chakram throws, staff work and the occasional bit of fantasy spectacle, while the camera stays close and mobile without much grit. The score swells with brass and drums for battles and softens for quieter exchanges between its two leads. Tone shifts constantly between earnest and winking, so a grim backstory can sit beside a pratfall or an in-joke. Violence is frequent but stylised: bloodless swordplay, monsters and villains dispatched with a flourish, and occasional menace or dark sorcery that stays more eerie than gory. Sexual content is minimal and suggestive, with the central bond between Xena and Gabrielle carried mostly through loyalty and affection. Best suited to comfort rewatches, long weekend afternoons, or anyone wanting campy, mythology-flavoured adventure with a flawed heroine finding her way back toward decency, and a strong, lightly romantic friendship at its heart.
