The story

In 1987, as martial law ends in Taiwan, Jia-han and Birdy fall in love amid family pressure, homophobia and social stigma.

What it’s like

Muted, sun-faded schoolyard light and the washed, slightly warm palette of late-1980s Taiwan, with the grain of a film print that feels like a memory rather than a record. The camera tends to stay close and patient, lingering on faces in hallways, bicycles on humid streets, and the quiet gaps between classes, while the score leans on soft piano and sparse strings that swell only when feelings can no longer be held back. Pacing is unhurried, with long stretches of glances, silences and small domestic moments that carry as much weight as the dialogue. The vibe is bittersweet and aching, a slow-burning ache of first love shadowed by fear of being discovered. Its intensity is emotional rather than graphic: there is harassment, family confrontation and social cruelty, but little physical violence and no gore, and romantic content stays tender and restrained. It suits a rainy afternoon, a late-night watch alone, or anyone who wants a gentle but heartbreaking coming-of-age story for people who appreciate quiet, lingering emotion and period atmosphere.
