The story
Zed and Addison are beginning their final year at Seabrook High in the town that’s become a safe haven for monsters and humans alike. Zed is anticipating an athletic scholarship that will make him the first Zombie to attend college, while Addison is gearing up for Seabrook’s first international cheer-off competition. Then suddenly, extraterrestrial beings appear around Seabrook, provoking something other than friendly competition.
What it’s like
Bright, saturated daylight and flat, even lighting, the kind a Disney Channel television movie leans on, with pastel school hallways, crisp primary-coloured cheerleading uniforms and the glossy, digitally sharp finish of a made-for-cable production. The camera mostly stays put in tidy medium shots and wide establishing frames of a sunny suburban town, with quick cutaways to dance-number choreography and the occasional lurid green flicker of alien-contact effects. Sound is upbeat pop and musical-theatre numbers layered over bouncy scores, with the easy comedy of teen banter underneath. Vibe: sunny, silly, warm and light. It suits a lazy Saturday afternoon, a family movie night with younger kids, or an easy background watch while tidying up. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with songs punctuating the scenes at regular intervals. The emotional register stays breezy and affectionate, following a group of teens and monsters navigating graduation nerves, friendship and first-love flutters as the stakes rise. Intensity is very low: mild sci-fi peril, slapstick and cartoonish monster gags, with no gore and no sexual content. It is for families and fans of playful, inclusive teen musicals who want something gentle and cheerful.
