The story
A DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer who have been tasked with investigating one another find they have been set up by the mob -- the very organization the two men believe they have been stealing money from.
What it’s like
Sun-bleached Texas and Mexican border towns, all dust, scrubland and blown-out midday glare, with the palette tipped toward warm ochres, faded turquoise and the orange of desert dusk. Kormákur shoots it with fairly conventional energy: quick cuts, wide establishing shots of highways and motels, and handheld moments during the shootouts that keep the camera close to the chaos. The soundtrack leans on tough, bluesy guitar and driving rock during the chases and an easy, bantering rhythm in the quieter scenes. The vibe is loose and wisecracking, a buddy caper with sun-baked grit, best suited to a lazy weekend afternoon, a rental-car road trip mood, or a night when you want something lively and not too heavy. Violence is frequent and fairly bloody, with gunfights, beatings and some gore, though it is played for kinetic thrills and dark humor rather than dread. Sexual content is mild and brief. The pace is brisk and the tone is cheeky, with the two leads trading insults as they hunt down the truth. It suits viewers who want fast, funny, crowd-pleasing crime action with a sense of playfulness beneath the bullets.
