The story

Father Vergara—an exorcist, boxer and ex-convict—lives in a remote village in Spain. Hoping to be lost and forgotten, Vergara’s demons catch up to him.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and sweaty, with dusty village squares, whitewashed houses, and harsh midday glare giving way to lurid, candlelit interiors where shadows swallow the frame. Director Álex de la Iglesia's baroque sensibility shows in restless camera moves, saturated color, and sudden shifts between grimy realism and hallucinatory unease, all underscored by a score that swells with church-bell gravity and sharp percussive jolts. The vibe is gritty, dread-laced and darkly comic, a fever dream of guilt and faith. It suits a late-night binge when you want something unsettling and unpredictable. The pacing is brisk, the tone bruised and irreverent, and the arc of its scarred, reluctant priest is a slow, combative reckoning with his past. Intensity runs high: frequent brutal fights, bloody injuries, grotesque supernatural imagery, and some sexual content. This is not gentle viewing. It is for people who enjoy horror that doubles as a crime drama and who can tolerate ugliness in service of atmosphere and moral tension.
