The story

A man struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

What it’s like

Gritty, rain-slicked Los Angeles after dark, shot in cool blue and sickly green with sodium-orange streetlight spilling across wet asphalt, grimy motel rooms, and cramped occult back-alleys. The camera leans in with handheld unease and quick push-ins, while exorcism sequences flare into bursts of hard light and smoke. The score is a low, pulsing synth-and-strings bed that swells under dread. The mood is brooding and cynical with flickers of wry humour: a sardonic, chain-smoking exorcist who has lost his faith and is pulled back into a war he would rather avoid. The pace is brisk, episodic, and tightly plotted, built around jolts of supernatural shock and the feeling of a city hiding something. Intensity is moderate to high: possession scenes are unsettling and creepy, with bodily contortion and some bloody injury, and demons are menacing, though violence is more chilly and frightening than gory. Its drama turns on guilt, redemption, and reluctant loyalty, as a damaged man slowly accepts responsibility for others. It suits viewers who want supernatural horror with a noir edge and a comic-book swagger, watched late at night with the lights off.
