The story

The vampire Angel, cursed with a soul, moves to Los Angeles and aids people with supernatural-related problems while questing for his own redemption. A spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What it’s like

Rain-slick night streets, neon bleeding across wet asphalt, and the hard shadows of Los Angeles after dark set the look of this series, with a warm, sodium-lit glow spilling into the shabby offices and the cramped rooms where clients wait. The camera moves with a fairly restless, mobile energy, cutting between tight close-ups and wide city establishing shots, and the score leans on brooding strings and synth pulses that swell during fights and drop to near silence in quiet confessional scenes. The vibe is noir melancholy with a sly, wry undercurrent: a sun-starved, cynical world where humor cuts through the gloom. The rhythm is episodic, one supernatural case a week, with a serialized thread of redemption and loss running underneath. Violence is regular and fairly stylised, with vampire fights, staking, and gore that is bloody but brief, and there is some sexual tension and suggestive content. Fear comes more from dread and tragedy than from jump scares. It suits late-night viewing alone, a rainy evening, or anyone wanting dark fantasy with a noir edge and a moody, self-serious hero. It is not gentle.
