A Bad Moms Christmas

The story

Amy, Kiki and Carla – three under-appreciated and over-burdened women – rebel against the challenges and expectations of the Super Bowl for mothers: Christmas. And if creating a more perfect holiday for their families wasn’t hard enough, they have to do all of that while hosting and entertaining their own mothers.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated suburban Christmas: glowing fairy lights strung over cul-de-sac lawns, glossy kitchens full of cookie tins and ornaments, and the cheerful clutter of shopping malls and crowded living rooms. The camera stays close and handheld in the chaotic bits, catching fast cuts, pratfalls and slightly overexposed comic reaction shots, while the holiday sets are framed with a neat, almost catalogue-perfect gloss that the characters mock. The score leans on bouncy seasonal standards and jingly pop, with bursts of raunchy-pop needle drops that puncture the sentiment. Vibe: loud, warm, irreverent, a little frazzled. It suits a noisy holiday-week evening, a group watch with snacks, or a sofa afternoon when you want to laugh at the mess of the season. Pacing is brisk and gag-driven, and the emotional register is affectionate rather than sharp: three overworked women, each frustrated with the pressure to perform perfection, slowly find a way to support one another. Intensity is mild: crude jokes, sexual innuendo, profanity and some slapstick, with no real violence and no fear. For people who want a funny, bawdy holiday comedy that is kind underneath, and who are fine with coarse humour.
