The story

Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated daylight carries most of this film: sunny blue skies, lush blocky green fields, and a cubic Overworld rendered in glossy digital textures that look like a toy world come to life. Its opening stretches in a flat, ordinary Idaho town, with muted suburban colours and handheld, jittery energy, before the portal shifts everything into candy-bright palettes and wide, open vistas. The soundtrack leans on bouncy, upbeat rhythms and playful comic cues, and the pacing is brisk, built around banter, physical slapstick and quick cuts between quests and set-piece chases. The mood is cheerful and goofy, with a warm undercurrent about friendship and belonging as four mismatched people learn to rely on each other. Its intensity is mild: creature threats and tense moments arrive in a cartoonish way, with no gore and little real menace, though some chases and monster scares may startle very young children. It suits a lazy afternoon with family or friends, or anyone wanting an easy, colourful adventure with plenty of laughs.
