The story

An anthology series centered around some of history's most famous criminal investigations.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached 1990s Los Angeles, rendered in warm, grainy period palettes that cool into fluorescent courtrooms and dim, wood-panelled offices, with handheld camera work that keeps the characters close and a restless, jittery energy. Each season reconstructs a different real case, so the look shifts with the decade: big hair, tabloid television glow, and cramped, paper-heavy rooms. The score leans on tense, pulsing strings and sudden silences rather than melody. The pace is brisk and talky, built on legal argument, phone calls, and people pressed for time, with a steady undercurrent of unease. The emotional register is anxious and sharp, with the people at the centre slowly revealed as ambitious, compromised, and exhausted. Violence is limited and mostly off-screen or quick, though a killing is shown in brief, grim flashes, and there is frequent strong language, sexual talk, and racial and class tension. Not gentle, but not gory; it suits viewers who like courtroom procedurals and true-crime dramas, watched in focused evenings rather than as background noise.
