The story

Anarchy Online (AO) is a science fiction themed massive multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) set almost 30,000 years into the future, in an age where common surgical implants and microscopic nano-bots can relieve most forms of human suffering or transform any normal being into a weapon of destructive force.

What it’s like

Gritty, neon-smeared sci-fi with a sprawling, slightly dated 2001 MMO look: flat-shaded city blocks of towering grey-blue spires, sodium-orange street lamps, and dim interiors lit by glowing terminals and nano-glow effects that pulse in teal and violet over crowded plazas. The camera sits behind a third-person avatar and pans over wide, busy districts rather than cutting, so the world reads as a place to wander through rather than watch. Sound leans on synthesised hums, distant industrial drones, and a loping electronic score that loops quietly under the chatter of other players. The vibe is restless, lonely-in-a-crowd cyberpunk with a clunky, grindy charm: good for an evening of slow exploration, aimless wandering, or joining friends in a guild while something else plays in the background. Pacing is deliberate and repetitive, built on tasks, levelling, and crafting rather than dramatic set pieces. Violence is cartoonish and frequent in combat, with stylised hits and no gore, and there is little fear or cruelty beyond the usual MMO hostility. It suits players who enjoy long-haul persistence, social play, and the odd-looking charm of an early online world.
