The story
Neocron is a 2002 post-apocalyptic cyberpunk massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) developed by Reakktor Media GmbH (based in Hannover, Germany) and published by cdv Software Entertainment. It is considered the first cyberpunk-genre MMORPG, and is designed to integrate elements of first-person shooter games. Neocron was released in 2002 and the sequel, Neocron 2: Beyond Dome of York, was released in 2004. Both games were developed by Reakktor Media GmbH, but unfortunately the company went into insolvency in 2012 but survived and is now known as Reakktor Studios. A small Developer team of passionate fans have come together to revive, maintain and further develop the game, and have set up a Server for the public to experience the game that we hold so close to our heart.
What it’s like
Neon-soaked and grimy, with rain-slick streets, flickering signage and dim interiors lit by monitor glow and sodium lamps, the look of this 2002 cyberpunk MMO leans on a dystopian city built over the ruins of an earlier world. Its first-person viewpoint gives every corridor and alley a close, claustrophobic feel, and the day and night cycle shifts the mood from smoggy haze to darker, more menacing streets. The soundscape is industrial hum, distant gunfire, electronic chatter and synth-tinged ambience rather than a driving score, so exploring often feels more atmospheric than triumphant. Pacing is deliberate and grinding, built around wandering, trading, joining factions and slowly building a character, with long stretches of quiet urban roaming punctuated by sudden firefights. Tone is cold, cynical and lonely in a crowded way, with a sense of a city indifferent to its inhabitants. Combat is present and can be sharp and sudden, with gunfire and occasional brutal encounters, though gore is limited and the violence reads as game-like rather than graphic. Some of the content includes suggestive nudity and adult themes. It suits players who enjoy atmospheric, retro online worlds, slow-burn character progression, and the particular melancholy of a dystopian city populated by other people.
