The story

Bejeweled is a tile-matching puzzle video game by PopCap Games, first developed for browsers in 2001. Three follow-ups to this game have been released. More than 75 million copies of Bejeweled have been sold, and the game has been downloaded more than 150 million times. Although the game is no longer downloadable through PopCap's website, the installer can be downloaded via the Wayback Machine.

What it’s like

Bright, glossy gems in saturated primary colours sit on a dark blue-black board, each one lit with a small specular shine that makes the grid feel like polished glass. The look is flat and clean, built from simple 2D sprites with no grain or texture, and the sound is a light bank of chimes, soft clicks and a bubbly little cascade of notes whenever a chain goes off. Nothing demands attention in a hurry: swaps are quick, the screen rarely shakes, and the rhythm is brisk but forgiving, so a few minutes can stretch into an hour without tension. Its vibe is bright, tidy and gently absorbing, the kind of game that suits a coffee break, a long wait at the doctor's office, a commute on a slow train, or a quiet evening with a laptop on the couch. It has no violence, no gore and no fear, only a faint buzz of "one more round" and the small satisfaction of a combo landing. It is for people who want low-stakes focus, a soothing puzzle to fill spare minutes, and nostalgia for early browser-era gaming.
