The story

As Jimmy Keene begins a 10-year prison sentence, he gets an incredible offer: If he can elicit a confession from suspected killer Larry Hall, Jimmy will be freed. Completing this mission becomes the challenge of a lifetime.

What it’s like

Cold, grey-green institutional light gives way to sun-bleached Midwestern afternoons in this limited series, where long, patient takes linger on prison corridors, cramped interview rooms and dusty small-town streets. The palette runs muted: concrete greys, faded blues, the warm amber of a bar or a car interior at dusk. Camera work is mostly steady and observational, with close two-shots that let tension build in the spaces between lines of dialogue. Sound is sparse, with room tone, ventilation hum and the scrape of chairs doing much of the work, and the score arrives sparingly as low, unsettled strings. The vibe is wary, slow-burning unease with flickers of dark humour, the kind of show that suits a rainy evening alone or a focused late-night binge. Pacing is deliberate, and the violence is real but restrained: brief, sudden and grim rather than gratuitous, with a steady undercurrent of threat and some profanity. The emotional register is melancholy and tense. Its central arc follows a wary, self-interested man slowly drawn into a moral reckoning, and an uneasy alliance that grows reluctantly into something like trust. For viewers who like crime drama with character depth, prison-set tension and a moody, grounded visual style.
