The story
Unable to remember the past, high school senior Saya Otonashi must rediscover her destiny in order to defeat the chiropteran vampires that threaten her loved ones' existence.
What it’s like
Dusty, desaturated palettes with rust-brown and bruised-blue shadows, hand-drawn cels that hold still in rain, dim interiors, and humid Okinawan heat and night streets lit by sodium lamps and flickering fluorescent corridors. Camera moves are often deliberate, with slow pushes into faces and sudden hard cuts during fights. The score swings between sweeping orchestral and choral swells and sparse, eerie quiet, and the swordplay has a crisp, percussive snap. The vibe is melancholic and tense, a slow-burning dread shot through with bursts of bloodshed. Violence is frequent and graphic, with vampires torn apart, blood spraying in arterial bursts, and dismemberment shown without restraint, though sexual content is limited. The pacing favours long stretches of uneasy waiting and character friction, with a girl recovering fragments of her past and the people around her tangled in loyalty and mistrust. Best for viewers who want atmospheric monster horror and gory action with a serious, wounded emotional core, not for anyone seeking something gentle.
