The story
Madea winds up in the middle of mayhem when she spends a hilarious, haunted Halloween fending off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls, and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens.
What it’s like
Bright, flat, sitcom-style lighting carries most of this comedy: stage-like interiors with practical lamps, a haunted house dressed in cheap orange and purple Halloween décor, and simple medium shots that hold on Tyler Perry's broad physical gags and the reactions of the actors around him. The camera rarely does much flourish; it mostly watches people shout, stumble and bicker in tidy rooms, with a sitcom rhythm of setup, punchline and laugh track. Spooky moments arrive with stingers, creaking doors and jump-scare sound design that are meant to startle more than unsettle. Violence is cartoonish and slapstick, with fake-looking ghouls and zombies, comic beatings and a little peril but no real gore, and sexual content is absent. The tone is loud, warm and silly, with a crowd-pleasing, family-friendly edge despite a few crude jokes and sassy language. Expect a rambunctious arc in which a gruff, big-hearted matriarch wrangles unruly teenagers and learns to trust them. It suits a casual Halloween night with friends or a lighthearted family watch, and it is for viewers who want goofy, low-stakes horror comedy with a strong comic personality at the center.
