The story

Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev travels to America to make a documentary. As he zigzags across the nation, Borat meets real people in real situations with hysterical consequences. His backwards behavior generates strong reactions around him exposing prejudices and hypocrisies in American culture.

What it’s like

Handheld, unpolished digital video that looks like it was shot on whatever camera was in the car: flat daylight in motel parking lots, fluorescent-lit hotel corridors, cramped interiors with a lot of wobble and off-center framing, and the constant sense of a camera operator trying to keep up. Long stretches are interview-style, with people framed close and plainly unaware of what is coming, so the tension sits in the gap between a bright, cheap-looking image and the awkwardness spilling out of it. The score is minimal, mostly ambient swells and pop cues used for comic timing, and the soundtrack leans on overlapping voices, car radios, and the uneasy hush of a room that has just gone quiet. Vibe: restless, abrasive, cringe-comedy with a sharp satirical edge. It suits a loud night with friends or a late, slightly guilty laugh alone. The pace is brisk and episodic, built around escalating set pieces, and the emotional register is deliberately uncomfortable, with the comedy often coming from other people's discomfort. Intensity is high for sexual content and crude nudity, with frequent profanity, lewd and offensive humour, and some scenes of confrontation and public humiliation; violence is occasional and mostly slapstick-adjacent. Not gentle. For viewers who like provocative, unscripted-feeling satire and can handle sharp, shameless comedy.
