The story

A series of interconnected short films are the backdrop for a maniac screenwriter who pitches insane storylines featuring some of Hollywood's biggest and brightest. In some countries, like the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the structure differs. Instead of a pitch, the films are connected by a group of three teenagers searching for the most banned film in the world, Movie 43, which will ultimately lead to the destruction of civilization.

What it’s like

Crude, cheerfully ugly studio comedy with a grubby, overlit look: flat fluorescent offices, bland suburban kitchens and sunny California backlots shot in bright, unflattering daylight, with a jumpy, handheld-style camera that lurches between skits and a sitcom-bright palette. The sound is loud and broad, with stingers, toilet-humor sound effects and slapstick cues rather than any considered score. Vibe: sloppy, gleefully juvenile, a bit exhausting. It suits a late night with friends who want to laugh at things they'll feel bad about, or a joke-heavy background watch where nothing needs to land. Pacing is fast and fragmentary, each vignette a sharp cut to the next, and the emotional register is mean-spirited and deliberately offensive rather than warm; its many characters are mostly type-cast jokes who never change. Intensity is high: explicit sexual content, gross-out bodily humor, graphic gore, scatological and cruel gags, and a lot of profanity. Not gentle in any sense. For viewers who want shock-value sketch comedy, celebrity cameos played for absurd excess, and a tolerance for offensive, anarchic humor.
