The story
14 years after making a film about his journey across the USA, Borat risks life and limb when he returns to the United States with his young daughter, and reveals more about the culture, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the political elections.
What it’s like
Handheld, roving camera work that looks like guerrilla documentary footage: fluorescent-lit conference rooms, motel corridors, suburban kitchens and cable-news studios shot in flat, unforgiving daylight, with the frame often tilted toward whoever is talking. The palette is drab and everyday, so the absurdity lands in the faces of strangers rather than in any stylised image. Sound is ordinary room tone, overlapping chatter, car radios and a sparse comic score that stings rather than soothes. Vibe: loud, deliberately uncomfortable, mischievous, with a lurch of secondhand embarrassment that keeps tipping into laughter. It suits a loud night with friends, a sceptical rewatch, or anyone who enjoys watching people reveal themselves under pressure. Pacing is brisk and episodic, built on set pieces that escalate, and the emotional arc follows a clumsy father and his daughter who slowly reveal affection beneath the bluster. Intensity is high on crude humour, profanity, nudity, sexual content and some brief violence and frightening moments; it is not gentle. Made for viewers who like satire that holds up a mirror to American politics, pandemic-era anxieties and patriotism, and who can tolerate being the audience to real strangers' discomfort.
