The story
Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror is a 2D adventure game played from a third-person perspective. Via a point-and-click interface, the player guides protagonist George Stobbart through the game's world and interacts with the environment by selecting from multiple commands, while Nicole Collard is also a playable character in selected portions of the game. The player controls George's movements and can engage in dialogue with other characters through conversation trees to gain hints of what needs to be done to solve the puzzles or to progress the plot. He also have to collect objects that can be used with either other collectible objects, parts of the scenery or with other people in order to solve puzzles and progress in the game. By right-clicking on an object, the player gets a description and clues. The player character's death is possible if he makes a wrong decision.
What it’s like
Hand-painted 2D backdrops in warm, sun-baked tones give the game a storybook feel, with jungle greens, dusty ochre ruins, and night-blue temple interiors lit by torchlight and flickering lanterns. The animated characters are drawn in a loose, expressive cartoon style, and the cutscenes break up the exploration with comic timing. The soundtrack leans on mellow guitar, marimba, and folk-tinged motifs that suit the Mesoamerican setting, and the quiet ambient passages let you sit with a room and study it. Pacing is deliberate: you wander, examine, and talk your way through conversation trees, with the occasional frustrating dead end. The mood is adventurous and gently mysterious, with a playful wit underneath the historical intrigue. Peril comes in brief, uncommon bursts. Some scenes carry tension and implied danger, a few moments are grim, and a wrong choice can end your run, but there's no gore and little graphic violence. It suits players who enjoy clue-hunting on a rainy afternoon, fans of classic point-and-click puzzles, and anyone who wants a thoughtful, mostly gentle mystery to work through at their own pace.
