The story
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare differs from previous installments of the Call of Duty series. Previous Call of Duty games have a distinct three country-specific campaign style, while Call of Duty 4 has a more film-like plot with interlaced story lines from the perspectives of Sgt. Paul Jackson of the Marines 1st Force Recon and Sgt. 'Soap' MacTavish of the British 22nd SAS Regiment.
What it’s like
Grimy, desaturated military palette: night-vision green sweeps, dust-brown deserts under a hard noon sun, and grey, snow-blown Eastern European streets lit by flares and tracer fire. The camera stays close to the soldier's shoulder, with shaky handheld jolts during firefights and slow, cinematic swoops over helicopter flights and rooftops. Gunfire cracks sharply in the mix, radio chatter crackles over the top, and a driving orchestral score swells between quieter, tense stretches. It's a relentless run-and-gun rhythm broken by set pieces and brief lulls, with a tone of grim urgency rather than triumph. Two soldiers' stories alternate and gradually converge, giving the story a cool, film-like momentum. Violence is constant and bloody, with frequent gunfire, explosions, and on-screen deaths, and some scenes are tense and disturbing. Best for players who want adrenaline-heavy, cinematic military action and don't need anything gentle or restful.
