The story
Desert Combat is an award winning FPS mod for Battlefield 1942, created by Frank Delise, Brian Holinka and Tim Brophy. DC is set in Iraq during the first Gulf War. It acquired popularity since the 2003 invasion of Iraq by Coalition forces.
What it’s like
Sun-bleached and dusty, with flat desert light that bleaches sand to pale gold and turns distant dunes into hazy, shimmering horizons. The palette is mostly tan, khaki and washed-out sky, broken by smoke plumes, burning vehicles and the occasional oasis of green. Sound is the heart of the experience: the rattle of automatic fire, the heavy thud of tank treads, rotor wash overhead and the hiss of wind across open ground, with little music to soften it. Pacing is long and open, with stretches of crossing empty terrain punctuated by sudden, chaotic firefights, and the sense of being one small figure in a huge contested map. It is a PC shooter built around teamwork and vehicles, so the feel is more deliberate and tactical than twitchy, with a tense, grinding unease that builds across a match. Violence is frequent and mechanical, in the form of gunfire and explosions with no gore emphasis, and it carries the weight of war rather than gratuitous spectacle. It suits a long evening with friends online, or a solo session of tactical problem-solving. It is for players who enjoy large-scale military simulation, vehicle warfare and the slow-burn tension of open-map combat.
