The story

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter set during World War II, developed by Infinity Ward using a modified id Tech 3 engine. The single-player campaign spans three separate perspectives, with the player controlling American, British, and Soviet soldiers across the European theater. Gameplay emphasizes squad-based combat with AI-controlled allies who support the player during missions, making use of authentic period firearms, iron sight aiming, and a health point system with medkits.

What it’s like

Washed-out browns and olive drab over scorched European fields, with muddy trenches, smoke-filled village streets and grey winter skies that make every scene feel cold and damp. The camera sits low and close behind your rifle, with a steady iron-sight view and a slight wobble as you run, and the sound is a constant churn of gunfire, shouted orders, distant artillery and swelling orchestral strings that rise during set pieces and drop away to ringing silence after explosions. Pacing is relentless and mission-driven, cycling through three soldiers' perspectives so that each stretch of the war lands with fresh urgency. The tone is grim and doggedly earnest, more about the anxious blur of combat than individual character arcs, with comrades who fall beside you and stick with you. Intensity is high: frequent gunfire, bloody wounds and deaths, and bodies strewn across battlefields, with dread and chaos more than gore. It suits a late evening of adrenaline and atmosphere, and it is for players who want a visceral, historically flavoured shooter with a sense of being swept up in the war.
