The story
Firestorm is the official Expansion pack for Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and was released in March 2000 by Westwood Studios. Whether or not the information about the death of NOD leader Kane is true, it appears that a new menace is developing; this force will require an alliance between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of NOD. There are 18 new single-player missions and 15 multiplayer battles to keep you busy, and more than 30 minutes of live-action video to move the story along. Fight thousands of opponents for control of 30 territories in online play.
What it’s like
Gritty, sand-choked and military-drab: scorched desert under a bruised orange sky, hard-edged voxel tanks and mutant-infested ruins rendered in chunky pixel detail, with the grainy, washed-out tint of late-nineties pre-rendered live-action cutscenes breaking up the battles. The soundtrack is a driving industrial pulse with martial percussion and the clipped, urgent radio chatter of commanders, punctuated by the thud of artillery and the eerie hum of alien energy weapons. Its vibe is dusty, tense and militaristic, the feel of a long campaign night with the blinds half closed. Pacing is methodical: you build bases, harvest resources and push across territory in measured bursts, with the cutscenes giving the rivalry between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of NOD a melodramatic, slightly B-movie edge. Violence is constant but abstract, with units exploding in bursts of fire and civilians lost in the background rather than graphic gore, and the tone stays more dystopian than frightening. It suits players who enjoy tactical strategy, base-building and the stylised, earnest sci-fi of classic real-time strategy games, especially those who want competitive online skirmishes alongside a story campaign.
