The story

Geronimo follows clues in a diary all the way to Mouse Everest in search of his old friend Professor von Volt who has mysteriously disappeared.

What it’s like

Bright, brisk and comic, with the energy of a children's illustrated adventure: short chapters, lively dialogue and a narrator who keeps pulling the reader forward with jokes and small cliffhangers. The sensory world is cartoonish and colourful, a mouse-sized Italian city giving way to cold, bare mountain slopes and thin mountain air, rendered with playful exaggeration rather than lingering description. Its vibe is cheerful, quick-witted and gently mysterious, the kind of read that suits a lazy afternoon, a long train journey, or a child reading aloud at bedtime. Pacing is fast and episodic, with frequent shifts of scene that keep momentum up. The emotional register stays light and warm throughout, centred on loyalty between an anxious, endearing reporter-mouse and his absent old friend, and the arc is one of persistence and growing courage as the search becomes steadily more daunting. Intensity is very low: danger is mild and cartoonish, with no violence, gore or frightening content beyond the suspense of a missing person. It is written for young readers and for adults who enjoy playful, witty children's adventure with a puzzle at its heart.
