The story

The bizarre misadventures of a cowardly dog named Courage and his elderly owners in a farmhouse in Nowhere, Kansas.

What it’s like

Hand-drawn, flat-coloured cartoon frames with thick outlines and a sickly palette of murky greens, bruised purples and lamplight yellow, so that the rural nights feel dimly lit and faintly wrong. Its world is a lone farmhouse on a sunbaked, empty plain, where wide shots of dusty fields and dark skies press in on the characters, and the camera often lingers on a single eerie object or silhouette before anything moves. Sound leans on eerie organ stings, creaking floorboards and sudden shrieks that undercut the goofy surface. The vibe is cosy-creepy, a comedy of dread with a warm heart, the sort of thing to put on for a quirky late-night watch or a nostalgic rewatch with someone who likes their humour strange. Pacing is brisk, with short self-contained episodes that swing from slapstick to pure horror and back in minutes. Emotionally the centre is a timid, devoted dog who keeps showing up for the old couple who adore him, even when everything around them is trying to kill them. The monsters are cartoonish but genuinely unsettling, with frequent peril, grotesque creatures and jump-scares; violence is comic and bloodless, though some scenes are frightening for younger viewers. For adults who enjoy surreal horror played for laughs and anyone who wants loyalty and courage under unnerving conditions.
