The story
A young boy's horror comic book comes to life in this anthology series of terrifying tales.
What it’s like
Bold primary colours and sickly greens soaked into comic-book panels, with hard shadows, lurid red light and deliberately stylised, theatrical sets that look like pages pulled off a newsstand spinner. Each short episode opens with the gaudy, hand-inked comic-book transitions and wraps around a self-contained tale, so the look shifts from one segment to the next while the palette stays loud and saturated. The sound leans on pulpy stingers, creaking doors, thunderclaps and a jaunty, ominous horror score, with sudden silences before the sting. Pacing is brisk, each story built to a punchline-style twist, and the register is playful and knowing even when it turns grim. Violence and gore are frequent and cartoonishly overdone, with plenty of body horror and some sexual content and profanity; the splatter is graphic but more campy than disturbing, and the frights are jump-scare based rather than lingering dread. Best suited to a Halloween-season binge, a group watch with the lights on, or a fan of old EC-style horror comics who wants gleeful, gruesome fun rather than something gentle or quiet.
