The story
After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a legendary crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.
What it’s like
Pale grey regolith under hard, unfiltered sunlight, with inky shadows and a sky that is always black, sit alongside the glowing blue marble of Earth hanging overhead. The colony's domes and tunnels are warm and cluttered inside, while the surface feels vast, silent and dangerous, so the camera often hugs the characters in their helmets and suits. The score is restrained, with a wistful melodic pulse that rises for the bigger moments. After the death of a boy's father, a group of five friends sets out across the moon on a road-trip-style journey. It's a bittersweet coming-of-age adventure with a warm, hopeful register and a steady, unhurried pace that gives the friendships room to breathe. Peril is present in brief, tense stretches of scrambling and near-misses, but there is no gore and little bloodshed. Good for a Sunday afternoon with the family, or for anyone who likes sincere, gently emotional sci-fi about grief and loyalty.
